A concerned resident of Orofino pointed out the rich history in gold mining. Jason states, "Ore Fine is what Orofino started out to be. That is because the gold this town was founded on was Ore Fine, hence Orofino". Regardless, Orofino also has history in Lumberjacking. The fall Lumberjack Days and County fair is a unique experience. Nestled within the Clearwater River valley at an elevation of 1005, it’s population is 3200. Complete visitor services are available. Orofino calls itself a steelhead capital and for good reason. Close by is Dworkshak Dam and the largest Steelhead Fish Hatchery in the world. Orofino’s start came from the gold rush days. Gold was first discovered in Idaho on Orofino Creek at Pierce. There’s probably some truth to the saying that the streets of Orofino are paved with gold. The cement walks were made with sand from the creek. Forestry has become the major industry today and the Clearwater Forest Service office is just west of town.
